SUMMARY:SLOW Ride Exploring the Infamous Red Line
DESCRIPTION:From the event host\, Merlin Rainwater (contact: merlinrain@gmail.com\, 206-769-6549) : \n\n\n\nDistance: 10.00 miles \n\n\n\nPace: Easy: [Under 10mph] \n\n\n\nTerrain: Rolling \n\n\n\nRegroup: Stay together \n\n\n\nWeather Cancellation: Steady rain cancels \n\n\n\nRide Description:  Senior Ladies On Wheels invite you to ride SLOW to explore the history of Seattle’s infamous Red Line and learn how Seattle’s white citizens created and maintained a racially segregated city. We will ride about 10 miles through Seattle’s historic Central District\, following trails and low-traffic streets and riding only the most gradual hills. We stop several times at key points for conversation\, and we always wait for each other when we get separated by stop signs\, traffic lights\, or differences in rider speed. We’ll stop for lunch along the way where we can buy food or eat our own. \n\n\n\nThis is Cascade Bicycle Club Free Group Ride. It’s a social ride with experienced ride leaders to grow your confidence with group riding. It is free and open to everyone. The route consists of beautiful trails\, a few low-traffic streets\, and historic sites. \n\n\n\n“Easy Pace” is under 10 mph on flat surface without any headwind. Average walking speed is around 3 mph. We expect to ride this 10 mile course in about 3 hours\, including several stops. We will stay together\, with the intent of allowing the slowest rider to set the pace.  We will help you find your way back if you need to return to the start early. Carrying ORCA card is another good option. \n\n\n\nYou should dress appropriately for the weather\, but you do not need spandex or other specialized bike gear. All you need is a working bike and a helmet. If you haven’t ridden your bike for quite some time\, please do a ABC Check (link below) or take it to your local bike shop a few days prior to the ride date. \n\n\n\nPlease arrive 20 minutes before the published start time to ready your bike\, check in and participate in the safety and ride briefing. We will go over hand signals and what we say during the ride to keep ourselves safe. \n\n\n\nRegister -Follow the link to register and sign an e-waiver. . If you do not have an account with Cascade\, it is free to create an account. If you cannot make the ride\, you do not need to unregister. If you do not register\, you will need to sign a paper waiver before the ride. \n\n\n\nWeather – Steady rain will cancel the ride. The ride leader will be at the start regardless of the weather to negotiate with those who show up.

SUMMARY:Safe Routes to School for Seattle
DESCRIPTION:SNG-hosted: \n\n\n\n“At Seattle Neighborhood Greenways\, we believe that every child deserves to be able to walk or bike to school safely and comfortably. \n\n\n\nThis year\, we are working to change Seattle School District policies and programs so that helping students walk and bike to school goes from an afterthought to a priority. \n\n\n\nJoin us to discuss how we can work together this year to get kids safely to and from school. \n\n\n\nSeattle Neighborhood Greenways is pushing for systemic solutions to help improve the Safe Routes to School program citywide:1) Increase funding for safe streets near schools (crosswalks\, sidewalks\, speed humps\, etc.).2) Reform transportation planning when schools are refurbished or rebuilt.3) Improve programs such as the School Crossing Guard program\, which currently has vacant positions at one in three schools\, and Walking School Bus and Biking School Bus programs.4) Connect with individual school communities and champion community-identified priorities. \n\n\n\nHelp us brainstorm\, draft plans\, and identify next steps for this important campaign. \n\n\n\nWednesday\, February 26\, 5:30 – 7:00 pmLocation TBD: Central Seattle \n\n\n\n– – – More info on Safe Routes to School: http://seattlegreenways.org/safe-routes-to-school/ \n\n\n\n – – –We unfortunately won’t have child care for this event\, but we will have some coloring and games available.”

SUMMARY:Better Signals for Seattle
DESCRIPTION:From our beloved SNG: \n\n\n\n“All people deserve traffic signals that allow them to walk and roll safely and with dignity. \n\n\n\nJoin us to talk about how our traffic signals can be reprogrammed to prioritize people (not cars). \n\n\n\nIn 2020 we will advocate SDOT adopt a comprehensive signals policy that:1) Gives people enough time to cross the street.2) Limits how long people have to wait for a walk light. 3) Eliminates “beg buttons” except in rare circumstances.4) Gives people extra time to cross the street if they need it.”

SUMMARY:Getting Vision Zero Back on Track
DESCRIPTION:From Seattle Neighborhood Greenways: \n\n\n\n”\n\nVision Zero is based on the idea that no one should die or suffer serious injury in traffic. The City of Seattle has committed to reaching Vision Zero by 2030. But sadly\, 2019 was the deadliest year of the decade for people walking. \n\n\n\nJoin us to discuss how we can work together this year to get Vision Zero back on track. \n\n\n\nIn 2020 we will:+Hold the city accountable to implemented safer speed limits on all streets. +Focus city attention on the three most dangerous streets: Rainier Ave\, Aurora\, and Lake City Way. ”
