SUMMARY:Helmet Law Working Group Meeting
DESCRIPTION:The Helmet Law Working Group was convened this past summer by Central Seattle Greenways. The group is a collaboration with Cascade Bicycle Club and Real Change\, as well as individuals from other transportation and equity-focused groups. Our goal is to minimize unnecessary contact between police and people who bike. \n\n\n\nWe have been meeting regularly to discuss the future of the King County helmet law. DESCRIPTION:From the event host\, Merlin Rainwater (contact: merlinrain@gmail.com\, 206-769-6549) : \n\n\n\nDistance: 10.00 miles \n\n\n\nPace: Easy: [Under 10mph] \n\n\n\nTerrain: Rolling \n\n\n\nRegroup: Stay together \n\n\n\nWeather Cancellation: Steady rain cancels \n\n\n\nRide Description:  Senior Ladies On Wheels invite you to ride SLOW to explore the history of Seattle’s infamous Red Line and learn how Seattle’s white citizens created and maintained a racially segregated city. We will ride about 10 miles through Seattle’s historic Central District\, following trails and low-traffic streets and riding only the most gradual hills. We stop several times at key points for conversation\, and we always wait for each other when we get separated by stop signs\, traffic lights\, or differences in rider speed. We’ll stop for lunch along the way where we can buy food or eat our own. \n\n\n\nThis is Cascade Bicycle Club Free Group Ride. It’s a social ride with experienced ride leaders to grow your confidence with group riding. It is free and open to everyone. The route consists of beautiful trails\, a few low-traffic streets\, and historic sites. \n\n\n\n“Easy Pace” is under 10 mph on flat surface without any headwind. Average walking speed is around 3 mph. We expect to ride this 10 mile course in about 3 hours\, including several stops. We will stay together\, with the intent of allowing the slowest rider to set the pace.  We will help you find your way back if you need to return to the start early. Carrying ORCA card is another good option. \n\n\n\nYou should dress appropriately for the weather\, but you do not need spandex or other specialized bike gear. All you need is a working bike and a helmet. If you haven’t ridden your bike for quite some time\, please do a ABC Check (link below) or take it to your local bike shop a few days prior to the ride date. \n\n\n\nPlease arrive 20 minutes before the published start time to ready your bike\, check in and participate in the safety and ride briefing. We will go over hand signals and what we say during the ride to keep ourselves safe. \n\n\n\nRegister -Follow the link to register and sign an e-waiver. . If you do not have an account with Cascade\, it is free to create an account. If you cannot make the ride\, you do not need to unregister. If you do not register\, you will need to sign a paper waiver before the ride. \n\n\n\nWeather – Steady rain will cancel the ride. The ride leader will be at the start regardless of the weather to negotiate with those who show up.

DESCRIPTION:Join us to discuss and plan how we can work together this year to close the dangerous gaps in the Basic Bike Network (Pike/Pine gap\, 4th Ave\, Uptown connection\, 12th Ave gap). Help us brainstorm\, draft plans\, and identify next steps for this important campaign.  \n\n\n\nWe’ll be in the Pike/Pine room on the 2nd floor with some snacks and drinks.  We unfortunately won’t have child care for this event\, but kids are always welcome\, and we will have some coloring available.  \n\n\n\nSeattle needs safe and comfortable routes to get people where they need to go in and around the center city by bike.  \n\n\n\nWe’ve come a long way — thanks to years of advocacy\, Seattle built three major routes downtown at the end of last year. But there are still critical gaps in our downtown network\, where people on bikes are dumped into unsafe intersections with little to help them figure out where they’re supposed to go.

DESCRIPTION:From our beloved SNG: \n\n\n\n“All people deserve traffic signals that allow them to walk and roll safely and with dignity. \n\n\n\nJoin us to talk about how our traffic signals can be reprogrammed to prioritize people (not cars).  \n\n\n\nIn 2020 we will advocate SDOT adopt a comprehensive signals policy that:1) Gives people enough time to cross the street.2) Limits how long people have to wait for a walk light. 3) Eliminates “beg buttons” except in rare circumstances.4) Gives people extra time to cross the street if they need it.”
