Achievements

We don’t accomplish anything alone. But working with community members, partner organizations, and political leaders, we’ve played a big part in the following big wins.

Protected bike lanes on Pike and Pine streets

As a member of the Community Package Coalition, CSSA (then CSG) worked with other community organizations to secure funding in 2017 for concrete-protected bike lanes between Capitol Hill and Downtown as mitigation for the Washington State Convention Center expansion. The protected bike lanes are in place now and being put to great use by Seattle cyclists!

The repeal of King County’s Helmet Law

In 2022, King County’s Board of Health voted to repeal its bicycle helmet law due to its disproportionate enforcement against unhoused people and people of color.

This change was the culmination of a successful advocacy effort led by Central Seattle Greenways (now CSSA), Real Change, and Cascade Bicycle Club.

Bus Lanes for the “Late” 8 Bus

The 2015 “Levy to Move Seattle” expired at the end of 2024 and voters approved a new 8 year $1.55bn levy to replace it that contains money for Route 8.

As the levy was being crafted, it wasn’t obvious that Route 8 would be prioritized. We worked with District 3 Councilmember Hollingsworth who added an amendment to the Seattle Transportation Plan (the master plan document that guides the levy) to have “multimodal improvements” on Denny Way prioritized. Now, the levy calls out “Denny Way / Olive Way” as a signature transit project that will be funded.

In 2026, Mayor Katie Wilson signed an executive order directing SDOT to create dedicated bus lanes on Denny Way. Read more here.

Roanoke Lid

We helped save a bike and pedestrian tunnel that was in danger that had been removed from plans for a highway lid over State Route 520 in North Capitol Hill. Read about the plan and our successful pushback here.

Bailey Gatzert

We’ve been very involved with a community effort to create safer crossings and walking and bike infrastructure for students of Bailey Gatzert elementary in Yesler Terrace. We helped create a “walking school bus” program, secure funding for crossing improvements at 13th and Yesler, and prioritize concrete protection for bike lanes near the school on Yesler.
