Pike Pine Renaissance Audit

CSG took a group ride along Pike and Pine streets between Downtown and Capitol Hill to discuss how well the recently opened concrete bike lanes are working and ways the city can iterate on the improvements.

  • around 15 people with bikes discussing in a circle on a pedestrian plaza
  • a car stopped in a painted crosswalk
  • a car stopped in a bike box
  • cars stopped in a bus lane

Background

Central Seattle Greenways (CSG) has been advocating for protected bike lanes between Downtown Seattle and Capitol Hill via the Pike/Pine corridor for quite some time. As a member of the Community Package Coalition, CSG worked with other community organizations to secure funding in 2017 for concrete-protected bike lanes between Capitol Hill and Downtown as mitigation for the Washington State Convention Center expansion. In 2019, that funding opened ‘temporary’ paint and flexpost-protected bike lanes along Pike St between the Broadway bike lane and Downtown.

Since 2019, the Office of the Waterfront, tasked primarily with the redevelopment of Seattle’s Waterfront after the demolition of the Alaskan Way Viaduct, has been working on designing and building concrete-protected bike lanes as part of the Pike Pine Renaissance project. The project is now functionally complete.

Results

On the group ride, we discussed a number of things including the unconventional crossings at Melrose, lack of signage for cyclists and drivers, poor integration with the rest of the bike network, and cars still parked in the Bike Lane. We also discussed wins like increased safety with the added protection of concrete, wider bike lanes, protected signals, the arrival of No Turn on Red, and fewer conflicts with buses.
